Passenger dies, driver injured in Federal Way crash

Seattle Times staff reporter

A passenger in a small car was killed Thursday when the driver struck a van carrying a woman and two children in Federal Way.

Stan McCall, commander at the Federal Way Police Department, said the car "was pretty much demolished."

Witnesses told police the car was speeding as it traveled north on Hoyt Road Southwest shortly before 6 p.m. The car passed vehicles and wove between the southbound and northbound lanes of the 35-mph road, McCall said.

It collided with the van near Southwest 320th Street when it swerved into the oncoming lane while trying to pass a car.

The car's driver was transported to Harborview Medical Center by helicopter for treatment of life-threatening injuries, McCall said. The passenger died at the scene.

Police said both men appeared to be in their 20s. Their names weren't released.

The 39-year-old woman in the van and two children, ages 6 and 2, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The two-lane Hoyt Road Southwest remained closed until late into the night while police investigated the accident and emergency crews cleared the scene, McCall said.
