A 23-year-old Ravensdale man was killed in a collision when his car struck an elk on 276th Avenue Southeast near Maple Valley.
Ryan Kelly Meehan was driving a 1992 Ford Mustang southbound when he unsuccessfully swerved to avoid hitting a female elk near Southeast 236th Street at 2:30 a.m.
King County sheriff's deputies said the car continued traveling into the northbound lane after striking the female elk.
Sgt. Jessica Sullivan says the car crashed into two utility poles, shearing them off before stopping in the east shoulder. About 100 Puget Sound Energy customers lost power as a result of the accident.
The King County Medical Examiner Office's said Meehan died from brain injuries and skull and facial fractures.
