Parties fuming over primary ruling
Washington state Republican and Democratic party leaders say they will continue to fight to control primary elections, despite the U.S. Supreme Court decision endorsing the Top 2 system.
State GOP Chairman Luke Esser says further litigation is possible to ensure the party decides which candidates can identify themselves as Republican.
State Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz says the party will insist on the right to designate its favorites on the primary ballot.
Secretary of State Sam Reed says party endorsements can be listed in the Voters' Pamphlet but not likely on the ballot.
The Libertarian Party candidate for governor in 2004, Ruth Bennett, told The Seattle Times the court decision wipes out the chance of minor parties making it on the general election ballot.
