12 sent to hospitals after Metro bus crash

Police are at the scene of a bus crash which has left 12 Metro passengers injured in Des Moines.

About a dozen riders were taken to area hospitals Wednesday after a Metro bus accident on Pacific Highway South left afternoon traffic snarled near the Kent-Des Moines interchange.

Des Moines police and officials with King County Metro Transit said there did not appear to be any critical injuries suffered in the accident that occurred shortly before 2 p.m.

According to Metro spokeswoman Linda Thielke, the Route 174 bus was southbound in the extreme right-hand lane on Pacific Highway South when a vehicle in the lane to the left of the bus cut in front of the bus in an attempt to make a right-hand turn into a parking lot.

The bus was not heavily damaged, Thielke said.

"We had a bent bike rack," she said.
