Student would save UW reactor building scheduled for demolition

A University of Washington architecture student has nominated a nuclear reactor building on campus for historic preservation.

The student, Abby Martin, says the building is worth saving for its unusual design with glass windows and the historical significance of nuclear technology in the state.

The small reactor opened in 1961 to train and educate students. The reactor was shut down in 1988 and the building was idle until 2006 when the UW received funding for decontamination.

The UW plans to tear the building down this summer.
