The Metropolitan King County Council voted on Monday to give the hearing examiner authority to hear complaints about fees charged for processing land-use and building permits.

The new procedure is a response to a judge's order that the county set up a neutral appeals process for applicants who aren't satisfied with the response they get to their complaints from the Department of Development and Environmental Services. (DDES).

Snohomish County Superior Court Judge James Allendoerfer issued that order last year in a class-action lawsuit on behalf of permit applicants.
