WWU student dies of sudden MRSA pneumonia

BELLINGHAM — A Western Washington University student died a week after coming down with what he thought was the flu.

BELLINGHAM — A Western Washington University student died a week after coming down with what he thought was the flu.

It turned out to be the drug-resistant infection MRSA pneumonia.

The family of 20-year-old Chris Feden of Tenino says they can't believe how fast the disease came on.

His mother, Jackie Feden of Tenino, says doctors at St. Joseph Hospital gave him massive doses of antibiotics but they were unable to stop the infection that ravaged his lungs and led to Wednesday's death. His roommate had taken him to the school clinic on Feb. 14.

Whatcom County health officer Dr. Greg Stern says Feden's case appears to be an isolated incident.

The school sent an e-mail Thursday to all students and set up a MRSA information Web site.
