FAA investigates whether go! pilots fell asleep

HONOLULU — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what caused the pilots of a go! airliner to overshoot the Hilo airport by 15 miles. The question is whether they fell asleep.

HONOLULU — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what caused the pilots of a go! airliner to overshoot the Hilo airport by 15 miles. The question is whether they fell asleep.

A morning flight from Honolulu last week drifted off course and had to turn back to get to the Hilo Airport.

Reports say there also was a 25-minute period where ground crews could not get a response from the cockpit.

Mesa Air Group communications chief Paul Skellon says the airline is conducting a probe of its own and cooperating fully with FAA investigators.

The flight landed safely.

But if they pilots did fall asleep, that would be a violation of FAA rules that could carry penalties ranging from a warning letter to license suspension or revocation.
