Child molester Brent Krum on Friday was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of treatment for sexual deviancy. He told the judge he will always suffer remorse for what he did, and one of his victims said much of her life has been destroyed.
King County Superior Court Judge Joan DuBuque noted that, in imposing the sentence, she was following recommendations made by both the prosecution and defense. Krum could have faced up to five years in prison.
The crimes took place in 2004 and 2005 when Krum, 37, was a youth-group leader at Summit View Church in Redmond. In January, he pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree child rape and three counts of third-degree child molestation.
One victim, who was 15 when the assaults took place, told the judge that "for three years I had a really big secret. I was completely taken advantage of."
She said she lost out on her first kiss, her innocence and the last few years of childhood, and that her relationship with her parents was severely damaged because of the assaults.
The crimes took place in his Redmond home, in the Hollywood Hills area and at a Kirkland motel, according to court filings.
"I have no words to fully describe my regret. I will forever look back and regret what I did," Krum said.
DuBuque ordered a review hearing for Oct. 15 to determine whether Krum will be allowed to have any contact with minors, including members of his own family.
