OLYMPIA — A measure directing the Washington state ferry system to build a new ferry is heading to the governor's desk.

The bill, which passed the Senate last week, passed the House on an 80-17 vote Tuesday.

Last November, three ferries were taken off the Port Townsend to Keystone route after corrosion was found on their hulls. The bill is the first step in replacing the depleted fleet, calling for a ferry that can transport fewer than 100 cars.

Gov. Christine Gregoire has said she will seek $100 million for the planned new ferries.

Opponents of the bill say a bigger boat would serve better, while supporters contend swift action is needed.
