A police officer was struck by a car while directing traffic Friday night and suffered a broken leg.

The collision occurred just before 6 p.m. near Northeast 4th Street and 111th Avenue Northeast in downtown Bellevue. The officer was directing traffic on foot after firefighters had extinguished a car fire. A 2008 Audi, driven by a 75-year old Bellevue man, hit the officer who was thrown over the hood of the car.

The driver stopped and is cooperating with police investigators. There was no immediate signs the driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs. The officer had surgery Friday night for a broken femur. Bellevue police declined to name the officer and driver.
