A person was killed at about 12:30 p.m. today near Steilacoom south of Tacoma when struck by southbound Amtrak train 513, the Cascade service from Bellingham to Portland. The train had departed Seattle at 11:20 a.m.

Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said the person killed was trespassing on the track. He said local police are investigating the incident. As of 1:45 p.m., neither Amtrak nor the Pierce County Medical Examiner's office had information about the identity of the person who died.

Amtrak sent a relief engineer to take over. By 2:20 p.m., police had completed their investigation and the train with 256 passengers aboard resumed its journey.
