A pedestrian was struck by a train at a crossing in Stanwood this morning, an Amtrak spokeswoman said.

Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said the incident involving Amtrak Cascade Train 513 happened at about 9:30 this morning at the 271st Street Northwest train crossing.

A 63-year-old Stanwood man ducked under the railroad crossing arms as the southbound Amtrak train approached, according to Stanwood Police Chief David Bales. Witnesses told police that he tried to run across the tracks in front of the train, said Bales.

The man suffered critical head injuries and was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital, said Darin Reid , Stanwood Fire Department's operational fire chief.

He was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, said Bales.

Train 513, which runs between Bellingham and Portland, departed at 8:35 a.m. from Bellingham. There were 49 passengers onboard today, said Graham.

The train was delayed for about two hours, Stanwood Police said.

The collision is being investigated by Stanwood Police and Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.
