Sumner

A 35-year-old Sumner man was killed in a crash on West Valley Highway on Monday.

The man was killed when his BMW crossed into oncoming traffic, ran off the road and hit a tree, according to the State Patrol. The two passengers were critically injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The driver, whose name was not released, did not appear to be wearing a seat belt at the time of the 1:45 p.m. collision, according to the State Patrol.

Port Orchard

Rifle shot narrowly misses family of 8

Kitsap County sheriff's deputies say a rifle shot narrowly missed a family of eight in a house south of Port Orchard.

Deputy Scott Wilson said a shot fired from a neighbor's home narrowly missed a 48-year-old man who was watching the Seattle Seahawks game Sunday. His daughter, 24, escaped injury despite being hit with glass from a shattered window. The bullet caromed off the ceiling and hit a computer keyboard.

The neighbor, according to the sheriff's department, told deputies that he had been showing off his .270 deer-hunting rifle on the deck and didn't know it was loaded.

The man, 40, has been jailed for investigation of reckless endangerment, with bail set at $250,000.

A Clark County jail inmate awaiting trial in the shooting of a Vancouver police officer has been accused of holding another inmate hostage.

Jail officials said Matthew Ryan Hastings, 28, held a homemade knife on the other inmate for nearly 90 minutes. A special weapons and tactics team talked Hastings into surrendering Saturday evening.

Sheriff's Sgt. Timothy Bieber said he grabbed the other inmate in a 10- by 20-foot day room, wrapping himself in a mattress to avoid being jolted by stun guns.

Hastings pleaded not guilty to six counts of attempted first-degree murder after a 20-hour siege in which a police officer was wounded in July.

Spokane

Driver jailed after fatal crash

The driver of a large pickup that hit a sport-utility vehicle in Spokane was jailed on charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Bail has been set at $500,000 for a 45-year-old man arrested after the crash Friday night.

The crash left 10-year-old Wyatt Williams dead and three family members hospitalized.

Aberdeen

Missing bow hunter found cold and wet

A Vancouver, Wash., man missing in the wilderness near Humptulips, Grays Harbor County, was found Monday.

A search and rescue team found Corey Anderson, 26, around 3 p.m. He had been lost since about 5 p.m. Sunday after chasing a deer he hit while bow hunting.

Deputy David Libby with the Grays Harbor Sheriff's office said Anderson was wet and cold. He was taken to a hospital for observation.

Finley, Benton County

Teen killed crossing train tracks

An Amtrak passenger train struck and killed a 17-year-old boy while he was trying to cross a railroad track in Finley.

Benton County sheriff's deputies say the Portland, Ore.-to-Chicago train struck Joshua S. Austin on Saturday night. He died at the scene.

A 15-year-old boy crossing the tracks with him at a road crossing west of Highway 397 was not hurt.

Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole said the train, carrying 180 passengers, was delayed for about three hours.

Amtrak officials and sheriff's deputies are investigating, but Cole says there was no malfunction in the train or warning lights at the crossing.
