Another bridge crossed in park's makeover project
GREG GILBERT
The new 188-foot bridge is lowered into position at Lake Union Park on Friday. The 50-ton span crosses Waterway 3, providing access from Westlake Avenue to the waterfront park. The bridge installation wraps up the first phase of the 12-acre park, and will be opened to the public in late January.
A footbridge was installed Friday to link two sides of Lake Union Park, as part of several projects meant to revamp the public space.
The 188-foot bridge, made of steel, wood and stainless-steel cables, is expected to open to pedestrians at the south edge of the lake in January, Seattle Parks Foundation said.
The bridge, built with a half-million dollars from Safeco Insurance Foundation, will let pedestrians cross from the Westlake Avenue side to the rest of the 12-acre park.
"The bridge is really a key part that ties those two parts together," said Parks Foundation spokesman Todd Burley.
Other work in the $30 million park makeover includes fixing an old sea wall and adding terraced steps, a boardwalk and pathways.
The waterfront park renovations are slated to be done by 2010.
