A man who jumped onto northbound Interstate 5 near Pike Street from an overpass this morning was alive and alert when taken to Harborview Medical Center.
Police spokeswoman Reneé Witt said the man didn't land on any cars or cause an accident, but, she said, "we requested State Patrol to hold traffic so we didn't have [an accident]."
When Seattle Fire Department medics reached the man shortly after 8:15 a.m. he was conscious, Witt said.
The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center, for multiple fractures, said a fire spokeswoman. The man is in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Two right lanes on northbound I-5 approaching the Olive Way exit downtown were blocked for about a half-hour, the state Transportation Department said.
The information in this article, originally published Nov. 13, 2007, was corrected Nov. 14, 2007. In the earlier version, it was incorrectly reported that a man who jumped off an overpass near Pike Street died. The man survived.
