U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Pasco, has introduced a bill that would protect the scientific study of ancient human remains like Kennewick Man.

He says his legislation is needed to counter a Senate bill that would allow Indian tribes to claim prehistoric bones.

In the case of the Kennewick Man bones, courts ruled in favor of scientists. But lawmakers have been trying to clarify Indian claims under federal law.
