CHESAW — The Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests approved a plan for roads, underground pipes and a water filtering system for the proposed Buckhorn Mountain gold mine at Chesaw.

The Kinross Gold Corp. of Toronto can rebuild or add a total of 7.5 miles for trucks to haul ore from the mine to the Kettle River Mill in Republic.

The company plans to extract about 1.2 million ounces of gold and silver over eight years and employ 190 people in Okanogan and Ferry counties.

The company hopes to begin mining next year. Some environmental permits are still being challenged by the Okanogan Highland Alliance.
