Cocaine dealer gets 14 years

Tacoma

A Federal Way cocaine dealer with three houses and a fleet of fancy cars was sentenced Friday to 14 years in federal prison.

Carlos Daniels, 37, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was arrested after a lengthy wiretap investigation. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Daniels had been heard in recorded calls arranging a deal for 20 kilograms of cocaine. Agents stopped him in Tacoma and discovered nearly 24 kilos of cocaine in his car, along with $182,500 cash. A search of his home revealed additional cash, weapons and expensive jewelry.

As part of his plea deal, Daniels forfeited more than $250,000 cash, his three King County homes and four luxury cars, including a Rolls-Royce, two Mercedes-Benzes and a Cadillac, all of which were proceeds from drug sales, according to federal authorities.

Redmond

Pedestrian's death under investigation

Redmond police are investigating a Friday morning accident in which a pedestrian was killed by a dump truck.

Just before 8:30 a.m., a 21-year-old Bellevue man was attempting to cross Northeast 36th Street, police said. At the same time, the dump truck was turning onto Northeast 36th from the northbound lane of 148th Avenue Northeast. The pedestrian was struck by the truck's trailer.

"At this point, we don't have any reason to believe there was any fault on the driver," said Lt. Tim Gately.

The truck driver, a 52-year-old Bothell man, is cooperating with the investigation.

Kite surfer killed in storm identified

A kite surfer who died during Thursday's storm has been identified as 46-year-old Daniel Bergin of Seattle.

The King County Medical Examiner ruled his death a drowning.

Bergin was kite surfing on Lake Washington when he died. His was the only reported death attributed to the storm, in which winds hit 40 mph and gusts surpassed 50 mph.

Police: 6 slayings weren't random

The deaths of six men found in a secure Surrey, B.C., high-rise were likely not a random act, police investigators told The Vancouver Sun on Saturday.

The bodies, found by firefighters who were investigating a possible gas leak Friday, had blood about their faces and were found throughout the 15th-floor apartment at 9830 East Whalley Ring Road, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have said.

"It's a very complicated and extensive crime scene. We have to go through this methodically," said Cpl. Dale Carr, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Emergency personnel originally thought there was a gas leak at the building Friday because of a 911 call from someone at the complex, he said. The caller reported seeing several bodies lying in the apartment and assumed there had been a leak.

Police won't comment on how the men died, on motives for the killings or on how long the men have been dead. Carr did say officials detected no gas odors in the apartment hallways or at the crime scene.

Pilot who flew into building identified

An elderly man whose aircraft was in an accident last year but was recertified for flight afterward has been identified as the person killed when the plane flew into an apartment building with so much force it ended up near the elevator shaft.

Peter Garrison was an 82-year-old resident of Maple Ridge who had more than 60 years of experience as a pilot, officials said Saturday.

He was the owner and sole occupant of the plane when it crashed into the ninth floor of the 15-story building Friday in suburban Richmond.

The plane had recently been recertified for flight after an incident in February 2006 in which its landing gear collapsed on an airport runway, damaging the engines, said Bill Yearwood, a spokesman for Canada's Transportation Safety Board.

The aircraft was rebuilt and recertified, he said.

"In the investigation we will try to find out if there was anything wrong with the aircraft and if we do find something we would see if it had any bearing on the previous occurrence," said Yearwood, adding that there was no reason to suggest the previous accident had any bearing on the fatal crash.

The plane was shattered, with pieces in the building and on the ground.

Two people in the apartment were injured: one with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the other with minor injuries.

RCMP Cpl. Nycki Basra said residents were told it may be two months before they can return to the building because it has been declared uninhabitable for the time being.

Edmonds

Man hospitalized after standoff

An Edmonds man with a reported history of mental-health problems was removed from his mother's home Saturday by a SWAT team after he lunged at police with a steak knife, Edmonds police said.

Police arrived at a house in the 9300 block of 220th Street Southwest at 11:44 a.m., Edmonds police Sgt. Don Anderson said. Police were called by the owner, a woman who said her 48-year-old son was being aggressive toward her. She left the home after calling police.

When police entered the house, the man lunged at them with a 6-inch steak knife, Anderson said. The officers backed off, and the South Snohomish County SWAT team and a mental-health professional were called to assist. Police evacuated the homes of neighbors.

Shortly before 4 p.m., SWAT team officers entered the home and forced their way into a bedroom where the man had barricaded himself, Anderson said. When the man resisted arrest, a Taser was used to take him into custody.

No officers were injured. The man was taken to a hospital for a mental-health evaluation.
