Two 13-year-old girls were critically injured when they were hit by a car in Snohomish County yesterday.

The girls were riding their bikes on the shoulder of Machias Cutoff Road at 117th Drive Southeast near Lake Stevens when a woman swerved off the road and hit them, according to the sheriff's office.

At least one of the girls was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries after the 5:50 p.m. collision.

Collision detectives are investigating the scene and have yet to decide if the driver will face charges.

The woman was possibly distracted by a dog inside her vehicle when she swerved off the road, according to the sheriff's office.
