Crash kills driver, injures passenger

Wet weather temporarily halted paving on northbound Interstate 5 heading into Seattle on Saturday night and Sunday. But a spokesman for...

Sumner

A man driving a Dodge Neon died and his female passenger was injured Sunday morning in east Pierce County after his car hit a highway center barrier, causing the car to veer onto the right shoulder and roll.

The man, Elmer Casey, 19, of Kent, was ejected from his car and died at the scene. The 16-year-old woman, of Enumclaw, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup and then released.

The accident happened on westbound Highway 410 outside of Sumner about 5:15 a.m. Casey was speeding, according to the State Patrol.

Shoreline

Three injured as fire destroys home

Three people were injured Sunday morning when an accidental fire destroyed a single-family home in Shoreline.

The blaze, in the 18500 block of Second Avenue Northwest, was caused by flammable materials set too close to a halogen light bulb, according to Melanie Granfors, a spokeswoman for the Shoreline Fire Department.

The fire, which broke out around 9 a.m., was extinguished by firefighters in about 20 minutes.

The two adults and one child who had been in the house were taken to Northwest Hospital & Medical Center because of possible smoke inhalation.

Rainy weather slows wildfire's spread

Rain and cool temperatures over the weekend slowed the spread of a wildfire 36 miles north of Chelan, near the small vacation communities of Holden Village and Lucerne.

The Domke Trail fire had burned nearly 7,000 acres and was 20 percent contained Sunday, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Holden Village and Lucerne were evacuated last week as a precaution. The blaze continued to threaten Holden Road, which is the only road in and out of Holden Village. Nearly 500 people and four helicopters were working to contain the fire.

Wet weather also helped crews battling the 8,000-acre Pend D'Oreille fire in British Columbia, which has spread across the border into the Colville National Forest. Only about 200 acres in the U.S. had been affected by the fire, which was 20 percent contained.

Everett

Suspect sought in assault attempt

Snohomish County sheriff's detectives are looking for a man who attempted to sexually assault a woman in south Everett early Saturday. The attack occurred at 3:30 a.m. in the 12600 block of Eighth Avenue West, according to police.

The woman, who lives in the neighborhood, was taking a walk when she was approached by a man, whom she described as black, 25 to 35 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds.

The man said something to the woman, 26, and then attacked her. Neighbors heard the woman screaming and went outside, at which point the attacker fled.

The victim suffered minor head injuries in the attack. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated and released.

Police ask anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Office tip line at 425-388-3845.
