Plane returns to Sea-Tac after reported threat

A man who missed his Memphis-bound plane declared there was a bomb aboard Northwest Airlines flight 980, causing it to return to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after take-off.

The man was taken into Port of Seattle police custody, and it was determined he likely made the threat because he missed his flight and wanted to get on it, said airport spokeswoman Terri-Ann Betancourt.

The plane left Seattle shortly after 12:30 p.m. and returned as a precautionary measure, Betancourt said.

By 4 p.m., Port of Seattle police had checked the plane and baggage and found no threat, Betancourt said. Because the plane was fully fueled and weighed more than normal when it landed, officials are checking for structural damage.

The plane departed again at 5:15 p.m., Betancourt said

The man remains in custody; Port police and the FBI are deciding what charges to recommend.
