The long road to a new runway

1980s: The idea of a third runway first emerges.

1991: A special committee decides a third runway is needed, and proposes adding commercial flights to Paine Field in Everett and building another airport in the region by 2010.

1992: Opposition to the runway grows. Neighborhood groups, hospitals, cities and school boards join the fight.

1993: Des Moines, Normandy Park, Tukwila and Burien file a lawsuit alleging the environmental-impact statement on airport expansion doesn't adequately address the impact on surrounding communities. The lawsuit is delayed.

1996: The Port of Seattle begins to buy houses near the future runway. More than 100 homes are bought; 30 are demolished.

1997: FAA approves the project. Opponents sue FAA.

2004: With the last of 22 lawsuits filed against the airport operator resolved, construction begins.

July 2007: Paving is scheduled to begin.

November 2008: Runway expected to open.
