A contract worker on a repaving project in Skagit County was killed today by a street sweeper, according to the state Department of Transportation.

"Everybody is pretty upset and shaken right now," DOT spokesman Dustin Terpening. "Our sympathies go out to the victim's family."

The worker, an employee of Rinker Materials of Everett, will not be named until the family is notified, Terpening said.

The incident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. near milepost 53 on state Route 20 west of Burlington. The DOT is repaving the highway between Burlington and Anacortes.

The Washington State Patrol, Rinker and the DOT are investigating the events that led to the man's death.
