A week after it was sued over the issue, the city of Bellevue said today it will provide domestic-partnership benefits to gay employees.

A gay-rights advocacy group sued the city last week on behalf of three public-safety workers who said they were denied benefits, such as health care, bereavement and family leave, provided to families of heterosexuals.

Next month, the Bellevue City Council will begin discussing how to implement the benefits for gay employees.

When the lawsuit was filed last week, Bellevue city officials said they hadn't offered the benefits to all employees because they would have cost too much money.
