A sinkhole opened Sunday night in the westbound lane of Highway 2 near Index, forcing a brief lane closure and restrictions on oversize loads.

Workers patched the hole — 5 feet in diameter and 4 feet deep — and traffic resumed, said Greg Phipps, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

The agency and its contractors will decide today whether more repairs are needed.

Slide-control work was already under way in the area, and speeds limited to 35 mph.
