House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke briefly at a news conference Friday inside a biodiesel factory in South Seattle.
Here are some of the things she said:
On global warming:
"This is an energy issue; it's a national-security issue; it's an environmental-health issue for our children; it's an economic issue for our country."
"Yes, there are those who are in denial about it. But we ... cannot confine our initiatives, our hopes and dreams to those who are in denial. We have to do what is right for the children of the world."
On whether she would contemplate a significant gas-tax increase to get people to conserve gas:
"It's off the table."
On whether congressional Democrats are doing enough to get the U.S. out of Iraq:
"We put forth legislation that supports our troops, that honors our commitment to our veterans, and also holds the Iraqi government accountable. ... We believe that that is the right approach to take. Those who are dissatisfied with that, I salute for their enthusiasm and their point of view."
"As leaders, we have a responsibility to put something on the president's desk that will bring an end to this war, not just make a point."
On traveling to Syria recently, including a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad:
"I'm very proud of the visit that we made there. We believe in dialogue."
