Just when State Patrol troopers were breathing easy because a rash of roadway births had apparently ended, a baby girl was born on Interstate 5 on Tuesday.

Sandra Ruiz, 23, of Burien, called 911 from a cellphone while stuck in morning traffic, State Patrol spokesman Jeff Merrill said. Just after Ruiz was moved into an ambulance from the convertible that her sister was driving, she gave birth to Samantha Bocanegra Ruiz, seen above with her father, Ruben Bocanegra. The 5-pound, 13-ounce girl, born on the shoulder of I-5 near Spokane Street, is recovering at Swedish Medical Center/First Hill with her mother.

Ruiz is the fourth woman to give birth on the freeway in King County since Jan. 5.

Merrill said troopers are trained to deliver babies but don't have to use the training very often.
