Woodland Park Zoo's newest Humboldt penguin received a full physical Tuesday by a zoo veterinarian after arriving about two weeks ago from the Denver Zoo.

The 3-year-old penguin will help balance out the male-to-female ratio of penguins at the zoo, hopefully eliminating any competition between unattached males, according to a zoo news release.

The Humboldt penguin, which lives on the coastlines of Peru and Chile, is endangered. This one was transferred to the Woodland Park Zoo under a Species Survival Plan.

The new penguin will complete a required 30-day quarantine period at the zoo's animal hospital before she is gradually introduced to the other penguins and sent to live in the penguin exhibit, according to the release.

Woodland Park Zoo hopes to have her on view by early next month.
