North Seattle shooting leaves 1 man dead, police officer hurt

One man was killed and a police officer wounded in an exchange of gunfire in North Seattle on Wednesday night.

The shootout — between the man and two Anti-Crime Team (ACT) officers — began about 9:45 p.m. on Aurora Avenue North near North 90th Street, said Seattle police Sgt. Deanna Nollette.

The officers were driving on Aurora in an unmarked police sport-utility vehicle when they saw an altercation that included one man firing a gun at someone else, Nollette said. When the officers stopped and got out of their truck, the man fired at them and they fired back, Nollette said.

One officer, a six-year veteran of the department, was shot in the abdomen. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center, but his condition wasn't immediately known late Wednesday.

The body of the man who was killed lay beneath a tarp along Aurora while detectives investigated an hour after the shooting.

The names of those involved in the shooting weren't released by police Wednesday night. The other man involved in the initial altercation was detained for questioning.

"Our thoughts and our prayers are with [the officer] and his family," Nollette said. "We hope he pulls through this."

Earlier this month, an ACT officer in an unmarked vehicle shot a man after his car lurched toward the officer, police said. That man survived and was arrested this week on suspicion of assault and auto theft.
