An 18-year-old man was killed early Saturday east of Duvall when the snowmobile he was on was struck by a pickup driven by a teenage friend, police said.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was riding on the back of the snowmobile about 1 a.m. as it was being driven by a 20-year-old man, said King County Sheriff's spokesman Rodney Chinnick. A third friend, a 17-year-old boy, was following the snowmobile in his 1990 Chevy pickup truck, Chinnick said.

The pickup driver apparently tried to catch up with the driver of the snowmobile as both vehicles traveled north in the 12800 block of Kelly Road Northeast, Chinnick said. But the snowmobile's engine stalled in the middle of the road and the truck ran into it.

The 18-year-old died at the scene. The 20-year-old was taken to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were arrested but were not jailed, pending further investigation, Chinnick said.
