Woman hiker missing in Snoqualmie Pass area

Search and rescue teams were scouring the Cascades near Snoqualmie Pass for a woman who went missing Saturday. Dozens of workers and volunteers hiked on and off-trail and skied the backcountry trying to find the 31-year-old.

The woman, whose name hadn't been released by the King County Sheriff, went missing while she was snowshoeing with two friends on the Denny Creek Trail near Hemlock Pass, according to KING-5 TV.

The woman was equipped only for a day hike and not prepared to spend a snowy night on the mountain, rescue officials said Sunday.

Searchers were called out after the woman's friends reported her missing by cellphone. They resumed the search Sunday morning.

The King County Sheriff's Department coordinated the search effort, which was conducted by volunteers from several agencies, each with different areas of specialty, said Tara Murker, King County Sheriff's supervisor.

Volunteers on skis were in high demand Sunday, and the team was short bodies, according to a message left for volunteers who were paged by the King County Ski Patrol Rescue Team.

Denny Creek Trail is a popular, modest climb and is used heavily in the fall.
