Everett man, 21, killed at party

Seattle Times staff reporter

A 21-year-old Everett man was fatally shot early Sunday after a party turned violent just north of Brier.

Jay Clements, a senior at the University of Puget Sound and graduate of Kamiak High School in Mukilteo, was attending a party at a friend's house. At 2:30 a.m., police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor reporting screams and gunshots.

They found Clements face down near the curb in the 3800 block of 219th Court Southwest, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said. The man had been shot in the torso once or twice and was pronounced dead at the scene, Sessions said.

As of Sunday evening, no suspects had been identified, but based on witness accounts police are investigating whether some partygoers were gang members.

People at the house Sunday declined to comment.

Sessions said a group of uninvited guests showed up at the party. Fifteen to 20 people congregated outside, she said, and a fight broke out.

Six to eight shots were fired, shattering the windows of two vehicles belonging to partygoers, Sessions said.

Police and medics arrived on the scene within a few minutes, but by that time the crowd had dispersed, she said.

Sessions said police still were investigating the nature of the argument that led to the shooting.

"I heard yelling, and I couldn't understand what they were saying — all of a sudden I heard these shots and some girls screaming," neighbor Rosalynn Le said.

Terri Lawson has lived in the neighborhood about 30 years. Nothing like this has ever happened there before, she said.

"They were just kids having a party," Lawson said.
