Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McGavick announced today that he donated $2 million to his campaign. It will be reported as a personal loan to the campaign. The contribution comes a month before the September primary, and in the wake of a continuing gap in campaign fundraising with his incumbent, Democrat Sen. Maria Cantwell. In a statement, McGavick said he had raised about $4.5 million by June 30. He has roughly $1 million in the bank. Cantwell has gathered about $11 million for this race, and had about $6.4 million on hand as of June 30. "We know that the incumbent senator and her allies are spending and will spend nearly unlimited amounts to win this election," McGavick said in a statement. Cantwell spent about $10 million of her own money to topple Sen. Slade Gorton in 2000. Copyright © 2006 The Seattle Times Company
