It's election time for deciding on a new Washington quarter. The state Quarter Advisory Commission has put the three finalists up for a vote: • A salmon, Mount Rainier and an apple within an outline of the state. • A salmon breaching the water with Mount Rainier as a backdrop. • A Northwest Native American-style depiction of an orca. To vote for your favorite go to www.governor.wa.gov/quarter. The deadline for voting is April 30. Gov. Christine Gregoire will consider the results before selecting a winner. The new quarter will be the 42nd in a series commemorating the states. It is scheduled for release in 2007. Five quarters are being released a year, based on the order in which each state entered the union. The program ends in 2008, with quarters released for Alaska and Hawaii. People can also vote by mail by sending their ballots to Washington State Quarter, P.O. Box 42675, Olympia, WA 98504-2675. Copyright © 2006 The Seattle Times Company
