Rash of burglaries

plague East Hill

Police are warning residents about a rash of burglaries in the East Hill neighborhood over the past three months.

Since Jan. 1, that neighborhood has reported 91 of the city's 122 residential robberies. The area extends from 94th Avenue to city limits with Covington, and from 200th Street on the north to 288th Street on the south.

The burglaries represent a 20 percent increase over the same period last year. Six cases have resulted in 11 arrests so far.

Many of the break-ins occurred during school hours, police said. Typically the stolen items would fit in pockets or backpacks. Suspects are often young males, 13-17 years old, wearing dark clothing and carrying backpacks.

The burglaries follow a pattern, starting with a loud knock on the front door. If someone answers, the burglar will make an excuse and leave. If no one answers, the burglars force entry.

Police are urging residents who see any suspicious activity to call 911.

Fort Lewis

Sergeant charged

with murder

A Fort Lewis sergeant has been charged with premeditated murder in the death earlier this month of another sergeant's wife, the Army said Friday.

Sgt. Godfrey J. Hurley was charged in the death of Lisa R. Nossett, 28, whose body was discovered in her on-post housing March 11. She was the wife of Sgt. Christopher Nossett.

Hurley, 38, a chemical-operations sergeant assigned to 62nd Chemical Co., 23rd Chemical Battalion, was arrested Friday on the base south of Tacoma, the Army said in a statement.

Nossett died from sharp force injuries to the neck and torso, the Army said without providing any additional details.

Hurley, who has been in the Army for 14 years, arrived at Fort Lewis in December 2002. His previous assignments included Korea, Fort Polk and Germany.

Christopher Nossett, an active-duty soldier stationed in Korea, returned to Fort Lewis after the slaying, and the Army said the couple's two children were in his care.

Bucoda, Thurston County

Residents seek

new mayor's recall

A group of residents in Bucoda has filed a petition to oust Mayor Kathy Martin less than three months into her term of office.

Sixteen people signed a letter to the county auditor, delivered late Wednesday, accusing Martin of creating upheaval in Bucoda and asking for a recall election. They allege she violated her oath of office.

Martin won one of the closest elections in county history. Since then, feuding has crippled city government.

If a Superior Court judge decides there are legal grounds for a recall election, the group must gather the signatures of at least 69 registered voters; that's 35 percent of the total votes cast in the mayoral election.
