Scout from Washington collapses, dies at Oregon coastal camp

The Associated Press

TILLAMOOK, Ore. — An autopsy is to be conducted in the death of a Boy Scout from Washington state who collapsed on his way to breakfast at the dining hall of a camp on the Oregon coast.

Jory Lohnes, 16, was among about 250 boys and adults at a weekend leadership training session at Camp Meriwether. He was with two other boys walking on a trail from their campsite Sunday when he collapsed. Campers and officials used CPR and a portable defibrillator in attempts to revive him.

The state medical examiner's office in Portland is to do the autopsy.

Lohnes was a member of Troop 475 from Battle Ground in Clark County, Wash.

"There still is a lot we don't know, and we're still investigating," said Don Cornell, director of field service for the Cascade Pacific Council of the Boy Scouts of America. "We are interviewing witnesses and participants, and that hasn't been completed."

Camp Meriwether is on about 680 acres just south of Cape Lookout on Oregon's northern coast, about 20 miles south of Tillamook.
