City Council to narrow list of applicants

The City Council hopes to winnow a field of 98 applicants for a vacant council seat to a dozen semifinalists by next Monday

The City Council hopes to winnow a field of 98 applicants for a vacant council seat to a dozen semifinalists by next Monday.

Each of the 98 applicants will get three minutes Thursday to tell the council why he or she should replace Jim Compton, who resigned Friday to pursue writing and teaching opportunities overseas. Council President Jan Drago outlined the process for selecting Compton's replacement in a statement Monday.

A week from Thursday, the council plans to interview 12 semifinalists and post their résumés on the council's Web site (www.seattle.gov/council). The council aims to narrow the applicant list to six finalists by Friday, Jan. 20. Starting Jan. 27, council members will vote daily until one applicant wins five votes. The council expects to swear in Compton's replacement Feb. 6.
