An Alaskan Way Viaduct collision early Sunday left one woman dead and northbound lanes closed for more than five hours near South Royal Brougham Way.

The driver of a blue Toyota apparently lost control and crashed into both sides of the viaduct, and an unidentified woman was ejected from the back seat and died, Seattle police spokesman Rich Pruitt said. The single-car accident, which occurred just before 1 a.m., shut down northbound lanes until almost 6:30 a.m., according to police.

The female driver and another woman sitting in the front seat suffered minor injuries, Pruitt said.

Dead driver identified as Renton man

The driver who died after his fuel truck overturned Saturday on Interstate 405 was identified by the State Patrol as James Knox, 47, of Renton.

Knox apparently had a heart attack or some other medical emergency but managed to drive the twin tanker to the shoulder at Bellevue without hitting any vehicles before he died, state troopers said. The highway was closed for about nine hours Saturday after the incident.

The British Petroleum tanker was carrying approximately 4,000 gallons of gasoline, according to troopers.

Wind causes power outages

Windy weather Sunday led to power outages across the region.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customers lost power at some point during the day. By 8 p.m., power had been restored to all but 4,000 customers on Whidbey Island and in Kitsap County, said PSE spokeswoman Dorothy Bracken. Areas affected earlier in the day included east Pierce County, Thurston County and Puyallup.

Seattle City Light spokesman Larry Vogel said about 6,000 customers lost power at 5 p.m. Affected areas included South Park, Shoreline and Magnolia. By 8 p.m., power had been restored to all but 1,300 customers in South Park and 75 in Magnolia, Vogel said.

In Snohomish County, about 7,700 customers lost power between noon and 2:30 p.m. All power was restored. Affected areas included Sultan, South Everett, Canyon Park and Brier, said Neil Neroutsos, a spokesman with Snohomish County PUD.

Woman kills self in jump from bridge

A Fremont resident reported hearing a car fall from the Aurora Bridge and crash onto North 35th Street on Sunday, but it turned out that the sound came from an individual who died in a jump off the bridge.

A woman in her late 40s apparently jumped off the Aurora Bridge about 5:45 p.m. Sunday and landed in the 800 block of North 35th Street, said Seattle police spokesman Rich Pruitt.

The woman was not identified.
