PORT GAMBLE, Kitsap County — A sunken tugboat near Port Gamble was leaking what appears to be diesel fuel into Puget Sound today, triggering an emergency response from the U.S. Coast Guard and the state Department of Ecology.
It wasn't known how much oil has spilled, or how much remains on board the 140-foot boat, said Ecology spokesman Larry Altose CQ. The department has sent a helicopter to track where the spill has spread, he said.
A private oil cleanup firm has been called in to help contain the spill.
The spill was first reported around 9:30 a.m. this morning by someone who saw a sheen on the water.
Spilled diesel fuel often forms a thin sheen that evaporates or breaks up quickly on water, unlike thicker crude oil that can amass in thick, syrupy layers that coat beaches.
Altose was uncertain who owned the tug boat, or when it sank.
