Car in chase lives on with listing on eBay

Seattle Times Eastside bureau

The saga of the stolen blue Subaru involved in a wild chase through the Eastside that was televised live last week may not be over.

The Kirkland owners of the rare 1994 Subaru SVX are trying to figure out what to do with the listing they had for the car on eBay. They had decided to put the car on eBay when their insurance company's offer for the damaged car was below what they believed it was worth.

When the eBay bidding closed yesterday — after more than 33,000 visits to the listing for the car — it turned out that many of the bids were phony, so those were eliminated. The bids reached into the $5,000 range.

The eventual apparent high bidder was at $2,325 — $1 above the reserve, or minimum, price the owners had put on the car.

"It didn't really sell," said Zach Malm, the son of the car's owners, Paul and Katy Malm of Kirkland, who said he was trying to recontact bidders to ask whether they really want to buy the car.

It might take through the weekend to accomplish that, he said.

"If nobody responds, I'm probably going to relist it," Zach Malm said.

If he does, he'll probably set a minimum price of around $2,000, he said, and see what the car brings.

On Oct. 4, the Subaru was stolen by a man who took it on a chase that went through Kirkland and Bothell, on Interstate 405 and side streets, through parking lots and even through Wayne Golf Course. The driver surrendered to police in a driveway in Kirkland.

The accused thief, Ryan James Wade-Everett, is scheduled for an arraignment hearing Monday in King County Superior Court. Prosecutors have charged the 24-year-old with two counts of residential burglary, two counts of first-degree theft and one count of attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle — all felonies. They also charged him with two gross misdemeanors: the attempted taking of a motor vehicle without permission and reckless endangerment.

If convicted, he may face 4 ½ to six years in prison.

As Wade-Everett started to move through the legal system, the Malms started moving through the insurance system, trying to settle with their insurance company over how much they'd be paid for the damage to the Subaru, the second one they've had stolen. The earlier theft involved a more sedate Subaru Legacy, not a limited-production SVX, a two-door coupe with a six-cylinder engine and unique styling that includes a window-within-a-window arrangement for the front doors.

After the insurance offer came in lower than he had hoped, Zach Malm decided to try selling the crashed and dented car on eBay.

That led to a phenomenon of its own, with various Subaru enthusiasts making bids and even writing a litany of comments about the car on the eBay site.

Yesterday, Katy Malm said that while the eBay listing hasn't worked out so far, things are looking up with the insurance company.

"The insurance company has compromised and is being much more reasonable," she said. She said the company was offering a higher figure than before, though she declined to name the insurance company or specify the offer.

But, she added, with any possible money from the sale of the car, there probably will be enough to buy another SVX of comparable worth, and her husband already has gone to look at a few SVXs, an all-wheel-drive car that was particularly nice for snowy business trips to British Columbia.
