PORTLAND — An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to two days in jail for attacking ducks at a cemetery.

Charles David Holmes also must spend a year on probation for the March 6 attack on the water fowl at a pond at Forest Lawn Cemetery in suburban Gresham.

Police were called to the pond after a witness saw two people hurling rocks at ducks in the pond in Gresham. Officers found Holmes and a friend, a juvenile, with the mallard flock huddled on land at one end of the pond and the injured duck in the water.

The police later took the duck to a veterinary clinic, where she was euthanized.

Holmes pleaded guilty to an attempted animal abuse charge in a plea agreement with the Multnomah County district attorney's office. He also paid a $350 fine for violating the federal law protecting migratory waterfowl, and must enroll in an anger management class.
