Youngsters associated with Seattle's Easter Seal Little Eagles program will be passing out free flowers — dahlias — to people who attend a rally this morning at Pike Place Market to draw attention to the Puget Sound Heart Walk, the American Heart Association's walkathon scheduled next month. Local heart-attack survivors, celebrities and Heart Walk participants will participate in the rally, which starts at 9 a.m. in front of the bronze pig at the Market's entrance. This year's Miss Washington, Tina Marie Mares, will be there, too. At the rally, people can sign a 40-foot banner in honor of someone who has been affected by cardiovascular disease or stroke. The 12th annual Puget Sound Heart Walk, which raises money for research and education for heart disease and stroke, will be held in Seattle on Sept. 24. Information is online at www.pugetsoundheartwalk.kintera.org. Free driver training Driver's Edge, a nonprofit program that offers free defensive-driver training to young drivers around the country, will make a pit stop in the Seattle area Saturday, and people ages 15 to 21 can sign up for free classroom and behind-the-wheel driving instruction. To attend, young drivers must have a valid driver's license or learner's permit and must register online ahead of time, at www.driversedge.org. Parents can attend the half-day sessions as well. Sessions are scheduled at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Emerald Downs in Auburn. Professional race-car drivers and driving instructors will teach the program. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says vehicle collisions continue to be the leading killer of youths in this country. Getting around
• White Center: As a result of frequent accidents near 16th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Roxbury Street in White Center, King County's Transportation Department is changing street parking in that area. In the two blocks of 16th Avenue Southwest between Southwest Roxbury and Southwest 100th streets, drivers will be allowed to back-in park only, a change the department says will allow drivers to see traffic more clearly when leaving the parking spaces. The change is scheduled to go into effect next month. Traffic watch Shoreline area: One or two lanes of Interstate 5 in both directions between Northeast 175th and Northeast 205th streets will be closed tomorrow night and again Thursday night to allow crews to stripe and pave sections of the freeway. The southbound car-pool lane will be shut down at 7 p.m.; the northbound car-pool lane at 8 p.m.; and other lanes at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning.
