Street may be rechristened for Fremont Troll

Seattle Times staff reporter

Edgar Martinez has one. Martin Luther King Jr. does, too.

Now another icon may get its own Seattle street: the Fremont Troll.

A two-block stretch of Fremont, between North 34th and North 36th streets, now called Aurora Avenue North, has been proposed for rechristening as Troll Avenue North in honor of the Volkswagen-clutching denizen that lives under the Aurora Bridge.

"This is something the community has wanted for a long time," said Mayor Greg Nickels, who sent legislation to the Seattle City Council proposing the name change. "Plus, it honors one of our most famous citizens, the Fremont Troll."

Dic Selin, with the Fremont Neighborhood Council, said the main reason for the name change was to stop the confusion for emergency vehicles that respond to calls on Aurora Avenue North and think it's on the Aurora Bridge, which is directly above the street.

"And what's at the end of Troll Avenue North but the Troll," Selin said.

According to the city, street-name changes are rare; just four have been renamed in the past 10 years. The most recent was Edgar Martinez Way by Safeco Field.

There are nine properties on Troll Avenue — warehouses, apartments and condominiums — but only one would have to have its address changed, because the others abut adjoining streets.

If the City Council approves the change, it would take about 30 days to rename the street. Maps and computer systems would be changed, and the Postal Service and utilities would be notified. It would be up to the property owners to submit address changes to the post office.

The change would cost about $310. Selin said the Fremont Council would pay the costs.

Selin said the property owners approved the change and the community has been working on it for nine months.
