1970: Published reports indicate Schwartzmiller was in Kentucky and traveled to Alaska, taking two boys with him. Neither the Kentucky Department of Corrections nor Probation and Parole have any record of Schwartzmiller.
Feb 12, 1970: Schwartzmiller was convicted in Juneau, Alaska, of three counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with three teenage boys. He was sentenced to two years' probation.
Sept. 30, 1972: Schwartzmiller was indicted in Alaska for allegedly molesting one of the boys he brought with him from Kentucky. He apparently fled before he could be tried.
March 14, 1974: Police in Mountain Home, Idaho, arrested Schwartzmiller for allegedly molesting two 13-year-old boys. He made bail and fled to Brazil.
1975: Interpol picked up Schwartzmiller in Brazil and extradited him to New York, where he was in jail for nine months. He was later sent back to Idaho on pending charges.
June 1976: Schwartzmiller was convicted in Idaho of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor under 16 and sentenced to a maximum of eight years. His lawyers appealed the case to the Idaho Supreme Court.
March 10, 1978: The Idaho Supreme Court reversed the conviction. The case was remanded for a new trial, and the defense lawyer talked the prosecutor out of a second trial. Because he was being prosecuted in Idaho, Alaska dropped its charges against him. Schwartzmiller was released.
May 1979: Idaho police issued an arrest warrant after two 14-year-old boys said he molested them.
December 1980: Schwartzmiller was arrested in Milwaukie, Ore., on charges he paid for the travel of a 16-year-old Perry County, Ark., boy, who flew by commercial airliner from Little Rock to San Francisco in June 1980. Authorities said Schwartzmiller took the boy to a neighborhood in San Francisco known for male prostitution and told the boy to charge up to $20 to have sex with men. The boy later returned to Arkansas on his own and appeared to be in good condition.
The U.S. Attorney's Office later deferred prosecution of Schwartzmiller to Idaho authorities. He was charged there with four charges involving "lewd and lascivious conduct with minor children."
Jan. 25, 1981: In Canyon County, Idaho, Schwartzmiller was sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in Idaho for four counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor. He served six years. While in prison, he worked with a fellow inmate to argue and win a federal court case to improve the conditions at Boise's Idaho State Penitentiary.
June 20, 1983: Schwartzmiller argued his case before the Idaho Supreme Court, claiming his conviction should be overturned because of "vague" legal definitions of illegal sexual acts. While his conviction was upheld, the court recommended the Idaho Legislature rewrite their laws.
August 1987: The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco overturned his 1981 conviction for the molestation of the Idaho boy and ordered his release or retrial. At his retrial in 1989, Schwartzmiller pleaded guilty to one count of lewd and lascivious behavior. In return, prosecutors dropped the additional charges against him, and he was set free.
Nov. 1, 1991: Multnomah County, Ore., officials charged Schwartzmiller with contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor and furnishing liquor to a minor. It is unclear how these misdemeanor charges were resolved.
1993: Schwartzmiller was sent to prison in Portland after he was convicted of three felony counts of sodomy involving three teenage boys.
1996: Schwartzmiller was released from prison in Oregon, but was repeatedly thrown in jail for violating the terms of his parole. He was also accused of sexually assaulting another boy in Oregon, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
1996-1997: Snohomish County officials, after new accusations, charged Schwartzmiller with four counts of child molestation and one count of communication with a minor for immoral purposes. He was acquitted of all charges.
January 2000: Oregon issued a felony arrest warrant for Schwartzmiller.
May 22, 2005: San Jose police charged Schwartzmiller with molesting a 12-year-old boy in San Jose.
May 23, 2005: Schwartzmiller was arrested in Snohomish County and charged with aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old San Jose boy and an outstanding warrant in Oregon. Seven additional felony counts were later added when a second San Jose victim is identified.
June 7, 2005: Schwartzmiller was extradited to San Jose, Calif.
