SALEM, Ore. — Salem Police have acquired a fleet of "bait cars" left in areas of high auto theft to catch thieves and, they hope, reduce the auto theft rate.
So far the "bait cars" have led to four arrests.
When someone enters the bait vehicle an alarm sounds at the dispatch center. Each auto is equipped with audio and video recording devices.
They also are equipped with GPS tracking systems to monitor where the car is at all times.
The program, a year in development, is sponsored by Farmer's Insurance, State Farm Insurance and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
In the most recent case a "bait car" was left in a high-crime area Tuesday night and was stolen nine minutes later.
Police quickly arrested a 22-year-old woman from Salem.
