Two held as accomplices in fatal beating in Tacoma

The Associated Press

TACOMA — A teenage girl and young man are being held for investigation of complicity in the fatal beating of a 69-year-old Navy submarine veteran and retired port electrician, police said.

The girl, 17, arrested Tuesday, and the man, 21, arrested yesterday, were jailed for investigation of first-degree murder although neither is believed to have participated in the beating of Darrel Johnson, officer Mark Fulghum said.

Both are believed to be linked to a dark green sport utility vehicle that was seen in the area where Johnson was attacked Jan. 9 during his daily walk, Fulghum said. Johnson died a week later.

Andrew J. Brown, 18, whose record includes a second-degree robbery conviction, has been charged with first-degree murder. According to documents filed by prosecutors in court, Brown later told others he had kicked and stomped an "old man."
