Two men hospitalized after an explosion at Woodland Park Zoo

An accidental fire at a circuit breaker panel injured two workers today at the Animal Health Hospital at Woodland Park Zoo.

By Seattle Times staff

Two electricians are at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle today after being injured in an electrical explosion at Woodland Park Zoo.

One of the men suffered second-degree burns covering most of his chest. The other man suffered minor burns to his hands.

The incident was reported about 10:15 a.m. at the zoo's animal hospital, which is adjacent to the main campus.

The electricians were installing a backup generator at the hospital when it blew up, said Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick.

Zoo staff had put out the fire by the time firefighters arrived. Investigators haven't determined what happened.

Fitzpatrick said the injuries were not life-threatening.

About two dozen birds — cockatiels and rosellas, a type of small parakeet — were being quarantined at the hospital when the explosion occurred, said zoo spokeswoman Gigi Allianic. None was hurt and zoo visitation has not been affected, she said.
