A 2003 graduate of Juanita High School in Kirkland was been killed in Iraq.

Marine LCpl Nathan Wood, 19, was killed Tuesday while clearing an apartment in Fallujah.

Lake Washington School District spokesman Peter Daniels said the school got the word Wednesday morning that Wood had been killed and the news was announced a Veterans Day Assembly at the school.

Wood's uncle, Bill Olsen, said Wood joined the Marines with several of his friends.

"He was just a kid and you don't realize that this is a real war until something like this happens," Olsen said.

"These are the kids that live next door to you, and they go to your high schools and they're just kids. They don't know any better," he said.

Wood, who was raised in Kirkland, served in the 3rd Battalion, 1st Expeditionary force, part of Lima Company, based at Camp Pendelton, Calif.

Fallujah has been the site of urban combat in the last several days as U.S. forces sought to take over the town from insurgents opposed to the U.S. occupation.
