Backing the monorail for the fourth time in less than a decade, Seattle residents shot down an initiative that would have killed the planned 14-mile line approved by a razor-thin majority of voters two years ago.

With 20 percent of the vote tallied, Initiative 83 was losing by a wide margin - with six out of 10 people voting against it.

The measure could not stop the Seattle Monorail Project from continuing to collect a 1.4 percent yearly tax on vehicles registered in the city — $280 a year for a $20,000 car.
